We are all very familiar with the massive oil spill that BP has been trying to deal with for some time now. If you have kept up with the news then you found out that this particular spill has topped the charts as the largest accidental oil spill ever. This BP oil well has set loose around 210 million gallons (5 million barrels) of oil into the Gulf. Obviously this is an incredibly difficult and complicated process, but the one thing that is for sure is that this spill must be stopped. It is causing incredible damage to plants, animals, and the overall environment.
It is very difficult to watch as this corruption leaks out. It is especially hard when this leaking corruption is so obvious, yet so difficult to stop. Many times in our lives we get involved with people and activities which are not good, pure, honorable, or right (Philippians 4:8). Sometimes these are very obvious, and other times they are not. Obvious or not, these people and things are leaking corruption into our lives. Just like with the BP oil spill, the one thing that is for sure is that this corruption in our lives must be stopped. Even if it is not seen right away, soon the corruption will leak out for all to see.
James 1:21 says, "Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls." As Christians, we need to put aside all of the things that are leaking corruption in our lives. Not just things that are blatantly wicked, but even the things that are the remains of wickedness. Maybe it is a TV show. Maybe it is a "friend." Maybe it is a sport (playing or watching) that takes time away from church and spiritual things. Maybe it is music. Whatever it may be, let's set aside all that remains of wickedness in our lives.
As long as we have corruption leaking into our lives, damage will be done. While experts are still working to find a solution to the BP oil leak, the spiritual solution for us is clear. Looking back to James 1:21, it said, "in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls." When we receive God's word into our lives, through obedience to His commands, we will see those leaks of corruption fixed and our souls will be saved. Let's work this week to further put aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, to fix those corruption leaks in our lives, and further bring God's word into our hearts. Remember, the heart is where the true "clean-up" takes place.
